Welcome to the Mind Fuzz newsletter, a recap of three things that are on my mind this week.
1. A Kanye Obsession
My hottest take yet:
I think how much you respect Kanye West says a lot about what you value.
Before you unsubscribe… just hear me out.
You can think he’s crazy, that he says and does things he shouldn’t – that much is true.
But how can you not respect someone who’s living their truest self?
“If you’re a fan of Kanye West, you’re a fan of yourself,” he says.
Kanye takes his internal, self-motivating dialogue and has the balls to put that out into the world.
He has literally spoken his life into existence.
To think someone’s truest self doesn’t have flaws is, in itself, a flaw in your thinking.
Can you imagine how different our lives would be if we even had half the amount of self-belief this man has?
“Took your thoughts and pencilled ‘em in,
Should’ve wrote ‘em down in pen,
And maybe they’d come to life.”
2. Offsetting Your Pleasure
You need to start offsetting your pleasure.
I touched on instant gratification in this week’s blog post – but it’s ruining more than just your attention span.
All these dopamine-inducing distractions are destroying your enjoyment for life.
Don’t think I’ve got this figured out – I’m right there with ya.
But I’m finding pleasure can build up like compound interest.
The longer you offset it, the more it grows.
Want to try it for yourself?
Try going 24 hours without your phone.
If this it too hard, then try going 24 hours without social media.
Whatever makes you slightly uncomfortable, see how long you can do it for.
The longer you experience discomfort, the more pleasure builds up in the background waiting to be enjoyed.
Life is funny, isn’t it?
3. Thoughts, Not Facts
“Nothing in this book is known to be true. It’s a reflection of what I’ve noticed – not facts so much as thoughts.”
The Creative Act – Rick Rubin
This is how I want you to look at this newsletter and my blog.
Whilst I try to write things as ‘factually’ correct as possible, at the end of the day I’m really just putting my thoughts on the page.
… and I’m not that clever.
But being afraid to say something because it may not be factually correct is why so many people are too scared to express themselves.
That Kanye point isn’t looking too silly now, eh?
I encourage you to always question my writing.
You might agree with it, you might think I’m talking sh*t – that’s the whole point.
You and I live very different lives, I’m just telling you what I’m seeing through my lens.
Take the parts you like, leave the parts you don’t… that’s the wonderful thing about being human.
Love you all, have an amazing week.
A closing question for you
What plans are you pencilling in that would come to life if you just committed to them?
