Welcome to the Mind Fuzz newsletter, a recap of three things that are on my mind this week.
1. Efficiency
The word ‘efficiency’.
It used to look so beautiful to me — get from point A to point B fast.
But as I allow imperfection, scarcity, boredom (among other words I used to fear) into my life, I feel efficiency is another domino about to fall.
Why do I need to be efficient when I’VE GOT NOWHERE TO BLOODY GO.
Saving time sounds so great, until you realise it’s impossible.
Goal: replace efficiency with proficiency.
Proficiency in being present with the process instead of obsessed with the outcome.
Proficiency in doing things well, not just quickly.
There is nothing to be efficient at – only proficient.
2. Alcohol
Alcohol is awful.
The fact that it’s so deeply embedded in society blows my mind.
In nearly every study on drug harm, both to the body and to society, alcohol ranks as the worst.
It’s at least always in the top two alongside heroin (in most cases, alcohol is ranked worse).
The line between legal and illegal has never been there to keep us safe or denote good from bad.
It’s there for control.
That’s why you should always question it, my friend.
After all, isn’t life made for exploring?
3. Time
“Time, which changes most people, does not alter the image we have of them.”
Marcel Proust
I think the biggest misconception we make when we change is that the world and people around us change with us.
That’s certainly not the case.
I remember coming home from my four-month trip around the world.
When I stepped back into my apartment, my old life hit me like a truck.
Monotony creeps back in, the same habits creep back in, and people will think you’re exactly the same person you were before.
Change is a funny thing.
If you do change, don’t expect anything else to change with you (but that’s the fun of it).
