June 30: High Steaks, Taking Action, Unplugging

Welcome to the Mind Fuzz newsletter, a recap of three things that are on my mind this week.

1. High Steaks

So… yesterday I ate meat for the first time in four years.

It was a pretty surreal experience and something I genuinely thought might never happen again.

Sometimes you can’t pinpoint the exact reason why you choose to do or not do something.

But it just felt… ‘right’.

I tend to steer clear of writing about diet/food related stuff because it’s so polarising and subjective, but I will probably write an article about my experience sometime soon.

Three and half years vegan and six months vegetarian comes to an end.

But a little bit more detail for ya…

It was a grass-fed rump steak.

The first bite was an explosion of flavour.

Then halfway through, it just felt so familiar, like I’d eaten it just last week.

Anyway, let’s see how this goes.

2. Taking Action

An idea is only as good as the action that follows.

I’m reading The Creative Act by Rick Rubin at the moment, and it’s changing the way I view creativity.

He talks about how ideas are like a revolving door, coming and going, waiting to be brought to life.

“If you have an idea you’re excited about, and you don’t bring it to life, it’s not uncommon for the idea to find its voice through another maker.”

I think this quote optimises the importance of taking action.

If you don’t actualise that brilliant thought inside your head, someone else will.

Stop waiting, just do it.

3. Unplugging

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

If you want to increase output, or even just make sense of what’s going on inside your mind, you need to unplug.

I used to suck at this, and I’m still not the best.

But I’ve found, for me at least, that overwhelm usually stems from consumption.

There are times through the day when I literally cannot get my thoughts straight.

In the past I would turn to my phone to numb my poor mind which was just trying to tell me something.

Now, I do my best to just sit with the emotion.

To unplug.

It’s so hard, but I know it works.

Try it.
